Feature films are characterised by fictional content. They have a length of at least 60 minutes, usually 90 minutes. The design and implementation places increased demands on the makers. This is why the genre is particularly suitable for inspiration and as an incentive to go beyond one’s own limits as a filmmaker.
Feature films: a class of their own
Firstly, feature films are demanding because in this genre, viewer interest must be maintained for over 90 minutes. This is impossible without in-depth dramaturgical knowledge. This applies not only to storytelling and screenwriting, but also to directing, camera work, the film soundtrack and of course the actors.
Secondly, the planning, organisation and realisation of several weeks of shooting is not without its problems. The shooting of a Hollywood film can take up to eight months. Without a well-rehearsed team, such a shooting marathon cannot be mastered.
Thirdly, the production of fictional works is extremely cost-intensive. And at the same time it is always a risk. No one can predict with absolute certainty whether the later work will meet the taste of the audience. If the success of a feature film were predicted pro, there would logically only be successful works. Statistics and Box Office prove the opposite.
Feature films or mouse cinema?
Feature films used to be a synonym for motion pictures. Later, television films were added. In order to emphasize the quality, people also liked to talk about TV movies. Today the distribution channel has become unimportant. Whether it’s the big screen in the cinema or the smartphone (jokingly called a mouse cinema again and again), since Netflix at the latest, it no longer matters where and when a film can be viewed. Therefore, today’s limits are all the higher when it comes to defining what a feature film is!
At the same time, the entry threshold to the film business has fallen massively, at least in technical terms. That is good news: Today, those who have the talent can prove themselves with a short film at festivals without ruinous cost consequences for their own budget and recommend it for the big screen.
