Curfew and social distancing as a result of the corona virus are also becoming increasingly evident in the number of films and TV series that are streamed over the Internet these days. There are striking differences between the measures taken to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. As well as an interesting special feature for Germany.

The ban on moving outside the home because of the corona virus, which has been imposed by the authorities in many countries, is now also reflected in the figures for video streaming. This is confirmed by a new study by JustWatch, whose data Filmpuls publishes exclusively in this article.

Countries with curfew due to Coronavirus / Covid-19

Nationwide curfews lead to a sharp increase in streaming values:

Nations like Spain, France and Italy are now showing significant increases in streaming rates due to the corona pandemic. In these nations, the volume of video streaming has tripled or doubled.

But also less strict regulations in the scope with the coronavirus, such as the requirement to follow such social distancing, are reflected in the streaming numbers of the different nations affected by the coronavirus pandemic:

In the United States of America, Mexico, but also England and Germany, the values for the streaming of TV series and feature films have risen by almost 50 % to 90 % in recent weeks due to the corona virus.

Top 3 film genres vary by country

With the exception of Germany, the forefather of all films about pandemics, Contagion (2011) by director Steven Soderbergh, has made it into the top 3 streams. Comedies have a hard time in the charts in many countries affected by the corona virus.

Only in Germany is a comedy in the top three ranks with the feature film “Long Shot – Unlikely, but not impossible”. Whether this is an indication that the coronavirus crisis has not yet reached everywhere in this country, we do not believe. The Germans probably fight Covid-19 with humor and action rather than with thrillers and horror movies.

Interesting and at first glance, the fact that all other countries, with the exception of Germany, also reflect the effects of a pandemic and the coronavirus (Covid-19) in their visual behaviour is striking. This becomes clear in the ranking for the feature film “Contagion”.
